We are so glad you stopped by.

Every January I see more people looking for the best way to lose weight, get fit, trying the newest diet craze, and taking my spot at the gym and 2019 is no exception. (Yes, I know it’s not really my spot.) The difference for our household is that we jumped ahead of the curve and started adopting a plant-based lifestyle the week before Thanksgiving.

Timing is everything.

Actually, we started our health journey years ago much like many of you. We did a Mediterranean diet for a while and had great results. I lost 40 lbs. and my husband and I both were feeling great! Then life got busy and the occasional cheat took a downward slide. Before long we were back to old eating habits and skipping the gym workouts. Is this resonating with anyone else? Since then we jumped on and off the diet wagon so many times that it seems more like a trampoline than a wagon. We needed to find something that would work with our busy schedules and the right motivation that would keep us on track.

Last summer we found it – our daughter announced that she and her fiancé picked a wedding date. Going wedding dress shopping with a beautiful, size-0 young lady who works out and eats right gave me the focus I need to do this. Maybe it’s a little vain, but I do not want to look like a sausage in a dress.

In addition to wanting to look good, we also noticed that we’re getting older. Every. Single. Day. We don’t want to watch our health decline as our family is about to gain a son and hopefully grandchildren. Now we are researching health and fitness rather than dieting since that is our end goal. The more we read, the more we saw a common theme; eat more fruits and vegetables. Whether Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, Weight Watchers, Flexitarian, Vegetarian, Vegan, or one of the other popular diets, they all encourage more plant-based foods. This is our starting point.

Everybody has different nutritional needs because every body is unique.  It’s presumptuous to think that one type of diet is right for everyone. Nor are we medical professionals so we cannot make any medical claims regarding anything that we review. That said, we will share our honest opinions and, when necessary, get a medical professional to give their input. We invite you to come along as we share our journey and hope that our non-traditional Thanksgiving resolution to make the best diet choices that we can while finding the best ways to exercise and get fit will, in some way, be helpful to your health journey. Just don’t take my spot.

Happy 2019 from Our Urban Homestead to you.
