My wife and I recently purchased what one would call our dream home. For Anne, she got the kitchen of her dreams. For me, a guy who loves to tinker about the house, we found the perfect home. Shortly after moving in we realized there was an issue with the septic.
We had the septic pumped but found within a couple of weeks the same issue. Water had begun to back up into the tub, toilet and it was not sunshine and roses. Yep, the drain field had become saturated and we were looking at a $5000.00 repair. “Septic drain fields also called leach fields or leach drains, are subsurface wastewater disposal facilities used to remove contaminants and impurities from the liquid that emerges after anaerobic digestion in a septic tank”.
I started looking at videos on Youtube in being a DIY guy I was sure there was an answer, and I found it. The video indicated most drain fields are not saturated with liquid but rather grease and soap scums. This meant you need to get something into the field that will dissolve those elements.
I visited the local Home Depot and found a chemical called Roebic K-57. This is an emergency care septic and
I immediately bought two containers of the chemicals, poured them into the toilet and flushed. I did this process every week for a month. It has truly helped as we no longer see backups into the house.
It is still not 100% but definitely saved us from shelling out thousands of dollars. With that said if you find yourself in this situation I highly recommend this product.
We also found treating your septic with RID-X a septic tank treatment found at most local hardware stores, can also assist in keeping your septic healthy.
We will continue this septic journey and update you next month as to the final conclusion in resolving this challenge.
